WCAG 2.2 Compliance Guide

Level A (Minimum Requirements)

Perceivable:

  • All non-text content has text alternative (alt text for images, labels for icons)
  • Captions for prerecorded video; audio descriptions for video-only media
  • Information and structure preserved when presentation format changes (no losing hierarchy when CSS is disabled)
  • Color is not the only visual means of conveying information (add icons, patterns, text)
  • Audio content can be paused, stopped, or volume controlled
  • Resize text up to 200% without loss of content or functionality
  • Ensure color contrast: 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text (18px bold or 24px regular)

Operable:

  • All functionality available from keyboard (Tab, Enter, Space, Escape, Arrow keys)
  • No keyboard traps (focus must move away without closing browser or navigating away)
  • Skip navigation link: first focusable element, visible on focus
  • Moving, blinking, scrolling content can be paused, stopped, or hidden
  • No content flashes more than 3 times per second (seizure risk)
  • bypass blocks of repeated content (skip to main content, skip nav)
  • Page titles describe topic or purpose
  • Focus order preserves meaning and operability
  • Link purpose identifiable from link text alone or context
  • Multiple ways to locate a page (search, sitemap, navigation menu)
  • Headings and labels describe topic or purpose
  • Focus indicator visible (2px minimum outline, 3:1 contrast against background)
  • Language of page identified in HTML (lang attribute)
  • No unusual words without definition; abbreviations defined; reading level below lower secondary
  • Consistent navigation across pages (same order, same links)
  • Consistent identification: same functionality labeled the same way
  • Error identification: describe the error and location
  • Labels and instructions provided for input fields
  • Error suggestion: provide suggestion for fixing the error when known
  • Error prevention for legal, financial, or data-critical submissions (review, confirm, undo)

Level AA (Enhanced Requirements)

  • Live captions for audio in real-time media
  • Audio description for prerecorded video content
  • Color contrast: 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text (more stringent on some elements)
  • Resize text to 200% without requiring horizontal scrolling
  • Images of text used only for essential decoration or customization
  • Multiple ways to find a page (site search, site map, navigation)
  • Headings and labels describe topic
  • Focus indicator visible throughout the component (not just at component boundary)
  • Language of parts identified (lang attribute on changed-lang content)
  • Consistent navigation across pages
  • Consistent labels and icons across the application
  • Error correction suggestions provided
  • Authentication without requiring cognitive function tests
  • Target size minimum: 24x24 CSS pixels for pointer inputs

Implementation Checklist

Semantic HTML Template

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
  <meta charset="UTF-8">
  <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0">
  <title>Descriptive page title</title>
</head>
<body>
  <a href="#main-content" class="skip-link">Skip to main content</a>
  <header role="banner">
    <nav aria-label="Main navigation">...</nav>
  </header>
  <main id="main-content">...</main>
  <footer role="contentinfo">...</footer>
</body>
</html>

Landmarks

  • <header role="banner"> for site header
  • <nav aria-label="descriptive name"> for navigation blocks
  • <main> for primary content (one per page)
  • <aside role="complementary"> for supplementary content
  • <footer role="contentinfo"> for site footer
  • <form role="search"> or <search> for search
  • <section aria-label="section name"> for content sections

Forms

  • Every input has an associated <label> (wrapping or htmlFor/id)
  • Group related fields with <fieldset> and <legend>
  • Required fields marked with aria-required="true" and visual indicator
  • Error messages associated with aria-describedby on the input
  • Success/error state announced by aria-live="polite" region
  • Autocomplete attribute on appropriate fields (name, email, address, phone)

Dynamic Content (ARIA Live Regions)

  • aria-live="polite" for non-critical updates (notification count, search results)
  • aria-live="assertive" for critical, time-sensitive updates (errors, warnings)
  • role="alert" for error messages (implicitly assertive)
  • role="status" for status messages (implicitly polite)
  • aria-atomic="true" when the entire region content should be announced
  • aria-relevant="additions removals text" for fine-grained what to announce

Modal and Overlay Patterns

  • Focus trap: Tab cycles within the modal, Escape closes
  • aria-modal="true" and role="dialog" on the modal container
  • aria-labelledby pointing to the modal title
  • aria-describedby pointing to the modal description
  • Return focus to trigger element on close
  • Body scroll prevented while modal is open

ARIA Anti-Patterns (Do Not)

  • Do not use role="presentation" or aria-hidden="true" on focusable elements
  • Do not use ARIA to override semantics (use correct HTML elements instead)
  • Do not use tabindex > 0 (use document order)
  • Do not nest interactive elements (button inside button, anchor inside anchor)
  • Do not use aria-haspopup for tooltips (not a popup menu)
  • Do not hide keyboard focusable content with CSS

Testing Tools

  • Automated: axe-core (axe DevTools browser extension, axe-core in CI)
  • Automated: WAVE (WebAIM extension, API for CI)
  • Color contrast: WebAIM Contrast Checker, axe-core contrast checker
  • Screen reader: VoiceOver (macOS), NVDA (Windows), JAWS (Windows)
  • Keyboard testing: tab through all interactive elements, verify focus visibility
  • Zoom testing: 200% zoom, 400% zoom without horizontal scroll
  • Reduced motion: prefers-reduced-motion: reduce testing
  • High contrast: Windows High Contrast Mode testing

Generate accessibility audit reports with specific code fixes, organized by severity. Use semantic HTML by default; only add ARIA when HTML semantics are insufficient.
