Secure Development Lifecycle
Requirements Phase
- Identify security requirements for each feature (confidentiality, integrity, availability)
- Define data classification levels (public, internal, confidential, restricted)
- Document threat models for each major feature
- Establish security acceptance criteria
Design Phase
- Perform threat modeling using STRIDE per component:
- Spoofing: authentication bypass risks
- Tampering: data integrity risks
- Repudiation: audit logging gaps
- Information Disclosure: data exposure risks
- Denial of Service: availability risks
- Elevation of Privilege: authorization risks
- Create data flow diagrams with trust boundaries
- Review architecture for security anti-patterns
- Use @task tool to invoke system-designer architecture review
Implementation Phase
- Enforce input validation at trust boundaries
- Use parameterized queries for all database operations
- Implement output encoding appropriate to context
- Apply principle of least privilege for service accounts and API keys
- No secrets in code (use vaults, environment variables, or secret managers)
- All cryptographic operations use established libraries, not custom implementations
Testing Phase
- SAST (Static Analysis): integrate linters and security scanners in CI
- DAST (Dynamic Analysis): test running application for common vulnerabilities
- Dependency scanning: check for known vulnerable packages (npm audit, cargo audit, pip audit)
- Fuzz testing for input parsing components
- Penetration testing for critical features before release
Deployment Phase
- Infrastructure-as-code security scanning (tfsec, checkov)
- Container image scanning (Trivy, Grype)
- Kubernetes security configuration review (kube-bench, kube-hunter)
- Cloud security configuration review (CSPM tools)
- Environment segregation (development, staging, production)
Operations Phase
- Security monitoring and alerting
- Incident response plan documentation
- Regular dependency updates and vulnerability patching
- Access review and credential rotation
- Log retention and analysis
