Authentication Bypass Techniques

Login Bypass

  • SQL injection in login: admin'--, admin' OR '1'='1, " or true--
  • NoSQL injection: {"username": {"$gt": ""}, "password": {"$gt": ""}}
  • Type confusion: send password: true instead of actual password, password[] for array bypass
  • Race condition: rapid concurrent login attempts on registration/forgot-password race window
  • Credential stuffing: username/email + password combinations from breaches (haveibeenpwned, dehashed)
  • Default credentials: admin:admin, admin:password, test:test, vendor defaults for enterprise apps
  • Remember me bypass: weak token generation (timestamp-based, sequential), static token reuse

Session Attacks

  • Session fixation: inject known session ID before login (victim authenticates with attacker's session)
  • Session hijacking: XSS to steal cookies (HttpOnly check), MITM for session capture
  • Session prediction: sequential session IDs (abc-1, abc-2), timestamp-based, weak PRNG
  • Concurrent session abuse: no concurrent session limit, session not invalidated on password change

Password Reset Flows

  • Token prediction: sequential reset tokens, timestamp-based, email-dependent
  • Token leakage: token in URL (?reset_token=), referer header, HTTP referer to external resources
  • Token reuse: used token still valid, no expiry on reset token
  • Host header injection: password reset link with attacker's domain (Host: attacker.com)
  • User enumeration: differing responses for valid/invalid email during reset

OAuth 2.0 and SSO Attacks

  • Redirect URI bypass: open redirect in redirect_uri parameter, path traversal in registered URI
  • CSRF in OAuth flow: state parameter missing or predictable, reuse of auth codes
  • Token swap: authorization code from one client used by another (audience validation missing)
  • Scope escalation: modify scope parameter during authorization request for elevated privileges
  • IdP confusion: trick application into accepting token from attacker-controlled identity provider
  • JWT confusion: public key for HMAC, accept unsigned tokens, use expired tokens

Authorization Bypass

Role/Privilege Escalation

  • Insecure direct object reference (IDOR): modify user_id, account_id in requests
  • HTTP method override: X-HTTP-Method-Override: PUT on GET-only endpoints
  • JSON mass assignment: {"role": "admin", "is_admin": true, "permissions": ["*"]}
  • Header manipulation: X-Forwarded-Host, X-Original-URL, X-Rewrite-URL for admin panel access
  • Cookie manipulation: modify role/permission fields in signed but unencrypted cookies

Path and Access Bypass

  • Direct admin page access: /admin, /dashboard, /admin/users, /wp-admin
  • API version downgrade: /api/v1/admin (with auth) vs /api/v0/admin (without auth)
  • Path traversal: ../admin, ..;/admin for reverse proxy bypass
  • HTTP method confusion: OPTIONS for discovering hidden endpoints, PATCH for partial auth bypass
  • Static file enumeration: admin JS bundles for API endpoint discovery, S3 bucket file listing
