Shebang and Strict Mode

  • Always use #!/usr/bin/env bash (not /bin/bash) for maximum portability
  • Enable strict mode at the top of every script:

Writing Portable POSIX sh

  • No arrays: use $@ or set -- for lists
  • No [[ ]]: use [ ] with proper quoting
  • No $(<file): use $(cat file)
  • No <<<: use printf '%s' "$var" | command
  • No local: use subshells for scoping
  • No export -f: use separate scripts or functions in sourced files
  • No type -a: use command -v or which

Shellcheck and Linting

  • Always run shellcheck script.sh before committing
  • Key checks: SC2086 (double quote), SC2206 (array from string), SC2181 (check exit code)

  • For zsh, use shellcheck --shell=zsh or zsh-specific linters (zsh -n)

Performance

  • Prefer builtins over externals: [[ over [, string ops over sed/awk, shell arithmetic over bc
  • Use printf instead of echo for portability and control
  • Avoid grep | awk — use awk alone
  • Avoid cat file | command — use command < file
  • For large files, use awk or sed instead of shell loops
  • Batch commands: group redirects { cmd1; cmd2; } > file instead of separate redirects per command

Testing

  • Use bats (Bash Automated Testing System) for unit testing shell scripts
  • Use shunit2 for POSIX-compatible testing
  • Test with bash -n and shellcheck in CI
  • Test across shells: bash, zsh, dash, busybox sh for portability
