C Modern Practices (C17/C23)
- Compile with
-std=c17 -Wall -Wextra -Wpedantic -Werror - Use
constfor read-only parameters and immutability guarantees - Use
size_tfor sizes, counts, and indices (notint) - Error handling: return error codes, use
errnoconvention, output via pointer parameters - Memory: prefer stack allocation over heap; document ownership for heap allocations
- Flexible array members for variable-length structs (
struct buf { size_t len; char data[]; }) static_assertfor compile-time invariants_Genericfor type-generic macros (type-based dispatch without macros per type)
C++ Modern Practices (C++20/C++23)
// Concepts for type constraints
template<typename T>
concept Serializable = requires(T t) { { t.serialize() } -> std::same_as<std::vector<uint8_t>>; };
// std::optional for nullable returns
std::optional<User> findUser(std::string_view id);
// std::span for non-owning array views
void processBuffer(std::span<const uint8_t> buffer);
// std::expected for error handling
std::expected<Payment, PaymentError> processPayment(const PaymentRequest& req);
// std::variant for discriminated unions
using Result = std::variant<Success, NetworkError, ValidationError>;

Embedded Patterns
- HAL abstraction: interface header per peripheral (GPIO, I2C, SPI, UART, ADC)
- RTOS: FreeRTOS for task scheduling, semaphores, queues, timers
- Memory: static allocation only (no
mallocin ISR), memory pools for dynamic needs - Interrupts: keep ISRs short (< 1us), defer work to task level, use flags not blocking
- DMA: for ADC, SPI, UART bulk transfers without CPU involvement
- Watchdog: independent hardware watchdog with periodic feed from main loop
- Power: deep sleep between operations, wake on interrupt or timer
Testing
- C:
cmockaorUnitywith CMock for mock generation - C++: GoogleTest or Catch2 for unit tests with matchers
- Embedded: Renode or QEMU for hardware simulation, Ceedling for test project management
- Code coverage: gcov/lcov for C/C++,
--coveragecompiler flag
