Preparation

- Tooling available: EDR console access, SIEM query access, forensic acquisition tools
- Communication channels: Slack, phone bridge, management escalation
- Evidence chain of custody forms ready
- Legal/PR/HR contacts documented
Detection and Analysis
- Initial alert triage: validate alert, determine scope, classify severity
- Timeline reconstruction: create timeline from all available log sources
- Root cause identification: entry point, vulnerability exploited, tool/technique
- Impact assessment: data accessed, data exfiltrated, systems compromised, accounts affected
Containment, Eradication, and Recovery
- Short-term containment: isolate host (network ACL, EDR isolate), disable compromised accounts
- Long-term containment: patch vulnerability, rotate credentials, apply IOCs to blocking rules
- Eradication: remove malware artifacts, revoke backdoor accounts, rebuild from known-good image
- Recovery: restore from clean backup, validate integrity, monitor for re-infection
Post-Incident
- Lessons learned meeting (blameless)
- Incident report: timeline, root cause, findings, remediation plan
- Detection improvement: new Sigma rules, SIEM correlation, alert tuning
