iOS Application Testing

Static Analysis (IPA)

  • Extract IPA: unzip app.ipa, examine Payload/App.app/
  • Mach-O binary analysis: otool -L, nm, strings for library linkage and hardcoded strings
  • Class-dump: class-dump-z App for Objective-C class/sel ector extraction
  • Hopper/Ghidra: binary disassembly for vulnerability discovery in reverse-engineered code
  • Info.plist analysis: transport security (NSAppTransportSecurity), URL schemes, background modes
  • Entitlements: codesign -d --entitlements - App for sandbox capabilities, keychain access groups

Dynamic Analysis (Runtime)

  • Frida: certificate pinning bypass (frida -l sslpinning.js -f com.app.name), method hooking
  • Cycript: runtime Objective-C introspection and manipulation
  • Cydia Substrate: tweak injection for bypassing jailbreak detection and SSL pinning
  • Burp Suite Mobile Proxy: configure iOS proxy, install CA cert, intercept HTTPS traffic
  • Corellium: virtual iOS devices for secure sandbox testing without physical device
  • Keychain dumper: extract keychain items with Keychain-dumper on jailbroken device

Common iOS Vulnerabilities

  • Insecure data storage: NSUserDefaults, Plist files, SQLite without encryption (NSFileProtectionNone)
  • Certificate pinning bypass: use Frida's ssl-pinning-bypass script, objection
  • URL scheme hijacking: custom scheme myapp:// registration via malicious app
  • IPC vulnerabilities: XPC services (NSXPCConnection) with improper validation
  • Snapshot security: app switcher screenshot containing sensitive data (UIApplicationExitsOnSuspend)
  • Pasteboard leakage: UIPasteboard with sensitive data accessible to all apps
  • Keychain accessibility: kSecAttrAccessible set to Always instead of WhenUnlockedThisDeviceOnly

Android Application Testing

Static Analysis (APK)

  • Extract APK: apktool d app.apk -o output/ for resource/smali decompilation
  • JADX-GUI: Java decompilation of DEX to readable Java source code
  • Manifest analysis: exported activities/services/broadcast receivers, permissions, debuggable flag
  • ProGuard/R8 mapping: recover obfuscated symbols via mapping.txt when available
  • Native library analysis: reverse engineer .so libraries with Ghidra for C/C++ code audit
  • Content provider query: content:// URIs for SQL injection in provider queries

Dynamic Analysis

  • Objection: objection -g com.app.name explore for runtime exploration, SSL bypass, environment manipulation
  • Frida: hook Java methods (Java.perform), bypass root detection, SSL pinning
  • RootCloak: bypass root detection for testing on rooted devices
  • Drozer: drozer console connect for Android component security testing
  • ADB: adb shell, adb backup, adb logcat for backup extraction and log analysis
  • IntentFuzzer: fuzz exported activities/services with malformed intent extras

Common Android Vulnerabilities

  • Insecure data storage: SharedPreferences, SQLite databases, internal files without MODE_PRIVATE
  • Logging leakage: Log.d/v/e with sensitive data (production builds with debuggable flag)
  • Exported components: android:exported="true" on activities, services, receivers with intent injection
  • Backup vulnerability: android:allowBackup="true" (adb backup extracts app data)
  • Tapjacking: no filterTouchesWhenObscured or FLAG_WINDOW_IS_OBSCURED
  • WebView XSS: JavaScript enabled, setAllowFileAccess(true), addJavascriptInterface with RCE risk
  • Deep link validation: intent scheme/host verification insufficient, URL interception by malicious apps
  • Firebase database discovery: *.firebaseio.com/.json check for unprotected Firebase instances

API Testing (Mobile-Specific)

  • API endpoint discovery: binary strings extraction, HTTP proxy traffic analysis, response body enumeration
  • Version skew: mobile API version override (old API with fewer auth checks, newer API without rate limiting)
  • Device fingerprint bypass: modify device ID, IMEI, advertising ID in headers
  • Token storage: check for tokens in shared prefs, UserDefaults, plist files, SQLite, keystore/keychain
  • Weak token generation: predictable tokens (timestamp-based, device-dependent, sequential)
  • Rate limiting on mobile: often less aggressive on mobile, test from different IPs
