Tool Selection

| Tool | Language | Protocol | Best For | |------|----------|----------|----------| | k6 | JavaScript | HTTP/gRPC/WebSocket | REST APIs, microservices | | Locust | Python | HTTP | Quick Python-based tests | | Gatling | Scala | HTTP/JMS/JDBC | JVM ecosystem | | wrk | C | HTTP | Raw HTTP throughput testing | | hey | Go | HTTP | Quick CLI load testing | | Vegeta | Go | HTTP | Command-line, scriptable |

k6 Patterns

import http from "k6/http"
import { check, sleep } from "k6"
import { Rate, Trend } from "k6/metrics"

const errorRate = new Rate("errors")
const paymentLatency = new Trend("payment_latency")

export const options = {
  stages: [
    { duration: "2m", target: 50 },   // Ramp up
    { duration: "5m", target: 50 },   // Steady
    { duration: "2m", target: 100 },  // Spike
    { duration: "2m", target: 0 },    // Ramp down
  ],
  thresholds: {
    http_req_duration: ["p(95)<500", "p(99)<2000"],
    errors: ["rate<0.01"],
  },
}

export default function () {
  const res = http.post("http://api.example.com/payments", JSON.stringify({
    amount: 29.99, currency: "USD",
  }), { headers: { "Content-Type": "application/json" } })

  check(res, { "status 200": (r) => r.status === 200 })
  paymentLatency.add(res.timings.duration)
  sleep(1)
}

Test Types

  • Smoke test: 1-2 VUs, verify system works under minimal load
  • Load test: expected peak traffic, sustained for 30-60 minutes
  • Stress test: 1.5-2x expected peak, identify breaking point
  • Spike test: sudden 5-10x increase, observe recovery behavior
  • Soak test: sustained moderate load for 4-24 hours, detect memory leaks

Metrics to Collect

  • Response time: p50, p95, p99, p999 (latency distribution)
  • Throughput: requests per second (RPS) or transactions per second (TPS)
  • Error rate: percentage of non-2xx/4xx responses
  • Resource utilization: CPU, memory, disk I/O, network, open connections
  • Database: connection pool usage, query latency, lock waits
  • GC: frequency, pause time, heap usage (for managed runtimes)

Reference k6.io for script examples and Grafana Cloud for results visualization. Always test against pre-production environment with production-like data volume.
