Design Principles by Provider

AWS

  • VPC: multi-AZ, public/private subnets, NAT Gateway per AZ, Transit Gateway for VPC mesh
  • IAM: least privilege, inline policies for exceptions, managed policies for standards
  • S3: block public access by default, bucket policies + IAM, encryption at rest (SSE-S3/KMS)
  • RDS: Multi-AZ for HA, read replicas for read scale, Aurora for performance
  • Lambda: 3 AZ deployment, reserved concurrency for critical functions, DLQ for async

GCP

  • VPC: auto-mode for small projects, custom mode with Shared VPC for enterprises
  • GKE: Autopilot for prod (managed), Standard for fine-grained control
  • Cloud Run: max instances limit (prevent runaway cost), invoker IAM binding
  • Cloud Storage: uniform bucket-level access, object versioning, retention policies
  • Cloud SQL: high availability (regional), read replicas, connection pooling with pgBouncer

Azure

  • VNet: hub-spoke topology with Azure Firewall, forced tunneling for compliance
  • AKS: Azure CNI for networking, managed identity for pod auth, Key Vault for secrets
  • Container Apps: environment-level Dapr integration, revision scaling rules
  • Storage: LRS (local), GRS (geo), RA-GRS (readable geo) for different DR tiers

Multi-Cloud Strategy

  • Avoid multi-cloud for primary workloads (complexity, latency, expertise dilution)
  • Use multi-cloud for specific needs: best-of-breed services, geo-presence, compliance
  • Common pattern: primary cloud for compute+data, secondary for DR, CDN across both
  • Abstraction layers: Terraform (infra), Kubernetes (compute), Istio (networking)
  • Portability: containers + Kubernetes + cloud-agnostic storage (S3-compatible APIs)

Reference well-architected frameworks: AWS WA, GCP AGF, Azure WAF. Tag all resources consistently (Environment, Owner, CostCenter, Project) for cost tracking.
