Istio Architecture
- Control Plane (istiod): pilot (traffic), citadel (certificates), galley (config)
- Data Plane: Envoy sidecar per pod (injected via mutating webhook)
- Gateway: ingress-gateway (north-south), egress-gateway (north-south outbound)
- mTLS: automatic mutual TLS between mesh-enabled services (PERMISSIVE for migration, STRICT for production)

Observability
- mTLS-enabled metrics: Prometheus scrapes from Envoy (workload-independent)
- Distributed tracing: Envoy propagates B3/Zipkin headers (no app changes needed)
- Access logs: Envoy sidecar logs each request (source, dest, latency, response code)
- Grafana dashboards: Istio service dashboard (RED metrics), workload dashboard, control plane health
Migration Strategy
- Install control plane (no injection yet)
- Enable mTLS in PERMISSIVE mode
- Enable sidecar injection namespace by namespace (least critical first)
- Deploy canary with sidecar, validate traffic flow
- Migrate all workloads, enable STRICT mTLS
- Enable authorization policies incrementally
Reference istio.io for latest API version (v1beta1 is stable, v1 for alpha features). Use Istio 1.22+ for Ambient Mesh mode (sidecar-less, node-level proxy).
