Service Level Objectives

SLO Definition

  • SLI (Service Level Indicator): measurable metric (latency, error rate, throughput)
  • SLO (Service Level Objective): target value for SLI over a time window
  • SLA (Service Level Agreement): contractual commitment (usually looser than SLO)
  • Error budget: 1 - SLO = allowable error over window
  • Burn rate: how fast error budget is consumed

Common SLIs:

  • Availability: percentage of successful requests (status < 500)
  • Latency: p99 response time < 500ms, p95 < 200ms
  • Throughput: requests per second or transactions per second
  • Freshness: age of data in cache or replication lag
  • Correctness: rate of data inconsistencies or processing errors

Availability Patterns

Redundancy

  • Active-Passive: one instance serves, replica takes over on failure
  • Active-Active: all instances serve traffic simultaneously
  • Multi-region: active-active or active-passive across geographic regions
  • DNS failover: Route53, CloudDNS, Azure DNS with health checks

Failure Detection

  • Health checks: /health or /ready endpoints, liveness vs readiness probes
  • Heartbeat mechanism between services
  • Circuit breaker states: CLOSED (normal), OPEN (failing), HALF_OPEN (testing recovery)
  • Gossip protocol for distributed failure detection (Cassandra, Consul)
  • Phi-accrual failure detection: adaptive timeout based on historical heartbeats

Recovery Strategies

  • Crash-only design: recover state from external storage, not restart
  • Graceful degradation: disable non-critical features under load
  • Rate limiting with backpressure signals
  • Bulkhead isolation: separate thread/connection pools per dependency
  • Retry with exponential backoff + jitter (base 100ms, cap 30s, max 3 retries)

Disaster Recovery

  • RTO (Recovery Time Objective): maximum acceptable downtime

Resilience Patterns

Timeouts and Deadlines

  • Per-request timeout: connect + read/write (base SLA + buffer)
  • Deadline propagation: pass remaining timeout to downstream services
  • Tail tolerance: hedged requests (send to multiple replicas, use fastest)
  • Use explicit timeouts, not infinite waits

Circuit Breaker Configuration

  • Failure threshold: 5 consecutive failures in 10-second window
  • Success threshold in half-open: 3 consecutive successes
  • Timeout in open: 30 seconds before transitioning to half-open
  • Consider: partial circuit breakers per endpoint or per customer

Bulkhead Configuration

  • Per-dependency thread pool: min(2 * CPU, requests_per_second * latency_in_seconds * 1.5)
  • Queue size: thread_pool_size * 2
  • Rejection: fail fast when queue is full (don't block caller threads)

Retry Configuration

  • Network failures: retry (transient, often succeed)
  • Rate limiting (429): retry after Retry-After header
  • Server errors (5xx): retry with caution (may overload server)
  • Client errors (4xx except 429): do not retry
  • Idempotency: required for safe retries (use idempotency key header)

Infrastructure Reliability

Kubernetes Configuration

  • Pod disruption budgets: minAvailable or maxUnavailable
  • Horizontal Pod Autoscaler: target CPU/memory utilization, custom metrics
  • Pod Anti-Affinity: spread pods across nodes and AZs
  • Resource requests and limits: CPU, memory with headroom
  • Liveness probe: restart unhealthy pods
  • Readiness probe: remove from service when not ready

Database Reliability

  • Automated backups with point-in-time recovery
  • Read replicas with failover capability
  • Connection pooling with PgBouncer, ProxySQL, RDS Proxy
  • Schema migration safety: backward-compatible changes, canary deployments
  • Query timeout to prevent runaway queries

Load Balancer Configuration

  • Health check: /health endpoint, 200 OK, < 5s response
  • Connection draining: 30-60 seconds before removing instances
  • Sticky sessions only when necessary (prefer stateless design)

Incident Management

Incident Response Process

  1. Detection: monitoring alert, user report, automated check
  2. Triage: severity classification, initial response team
  3. Mitigation: stop bleeding (rollback, feature flag, scale up)
  4. Resolution: root cause fix, verify recovery
  5. Follow-up: postmortem (blameless), action items, timeline

Postmortem structure: Summary, Timeline, Root Cause, Impact, What Went Well, What Went Wrong, Action Items (with owners and deadlines).

Generate reliability assessments with specific SLO/SLI recommendations, failure mode analysis, and mitigation plans. Do not modify any files.
