Performance Analysis Framework
Database Performance
Query Optimization
- Identify full table scans (missing indexes)
- Review N+1 query patterns (lazy loading, ORM misuse)
- Check for inefficient joins across large tables
- Analyze query plans for slow queries
- Monitor connection pool exhaustion
- Evaluate index usage (unused, duplicate, missing covering indexes)
- Check for lock contention (row, page, table level)
Schema Optimization
- Denormalization for read-heavy workloads
- Materialized views for complex aggregations
- Partitioning by date or key for large tables (monthly/quarterly ranges)
- Appropriate column types (smaller data types, not nullable when avoidable)
- JSONB/JSON columns for flexible but queryable data
- Array columns for one-to-many relationships without join tables
Caching Strategy
Multi-Level Caching
- L1: Application memory (in-process cache, microseconds)
- L2: Distributed cache (Redis, memcached, milliseconds)
- L3: CDN / reverse proxy (Varnish, CloudFront, Cloudflare) for HTTP caching
Cache Patterns
- Cache-aside (lazy loading): read from cache, miss -> load from DB -> populate cache
- Write-through: write to cache and DB simultaneously
- Write-behind (write-back): write to cache, async write to DB
- Cache invalidation: TTL-based, event-driven, or explicit purge
Cache Decision Matrix | Pattern | Use Case | Risk | |---------|----------|------| | Cache-aside | Read-heavy, moderate staleness ok | Cache miss storm on startup | | Write-through | Data must be immediately consistent | Higher write latency | | Write-behind | High write throughput | Data loss on cache failure | | Cache invalidation | Stale data unacceptable | Complex invalidation logic |
Application Performance
API Latency
- Profile endpoint response times (p50, p95, p99)
- Identify slow database queries per endpoint
- Check for serialization/deserialization bottlenecks
- Review payload size and unnecessary data transfer
- Evaluate batching opportunities for multiple calls
- Implement response compression (gzip, brotli)
Concurrency
- Review thread pool sizes (IO-bound vs CPU-bound ratio)
- Check for connection pool limits (database, HTTP, Redis)
- Identify lock contention (synchronized blocks, database locks)
- Evaluate async vs sync processing paths
- Review event loop blocking in Node.js/JavaScript
Memory
- Check for memory leaks (unbounded caches, closures, event listeners)
- Review object allocation rates and GC pressure
- Identify large object allocations in hot paths
- Evaluate buffer pool sizes for databases
- Check for off-heap memory usage (direct buffers, native allocations)
Web Performance
Frontend
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): optimize images, preload critical resources
- First Input Delay (FID): minimize main thread blocking (code splitting, lazy loading)
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): set explicit dimensions on images, ads, embeds
- Time to Interactive (TTI): reduce bundle size, tree shaking, code splitting
- First Byte Time (TTFB): optimize server response, CDN caching, database queries
- Bundle size analysis: webpack-bundle-analyzer, esbuild metafile
Network
- HTTP/2 or HTTP/3 multiplexing
- Resource hints: preload, prefetch, preconnect, dns-prefetch
- CDN for static and cacheable content
- API response compression and minification
- Connection keep-alive and pooling
Scalability Assessment
| Dimension | Bottleneck Signal | Mitigation | |-----------|------------------|------------| | CPU | High utilization, growing linearly | Horizontal scaling, async processing, caching | | Memory | OOM kills, high GC pause, swap usage | Increase instance size, optimize object allocation, add caching layer | | Database | High connection count, slow queries, replication lag | Read replicas, connection pooling, query optimization, sharding | | Network | Bandwidth saturation, connection timeouts | CDN, compression, connection pooling, reduce payload | | Storage | Disk IOPS limit, space exhaustion | SSDs, partitioning, archival strategy, compression | | API | Latency spikes, error rate increase | Rate limiting, circuit breakers, auto-scaling, caching |
Load Testing Guidance
- Target: 2x normal peak for growth headroom, 5x for events/emergencies
- Metrics: p50/p95/p99 latency, error rate, throughput, resource utilization
- Tools: k6 (scripting), Locust (Python), Gatling (JVM), wrk (HTTP)
- Patterns: ramp-up test, spike test, soak test (sustained), stress test (beyond limit)
