Decision Flow
- Is it server data? Use React Query/SWR (cache, refetch, optimistic updates).
- Is it in the URL? Keep it in the URL (search params, path segments).
- Is it used by a single component? Keep it in useState.
- Is it shared by few components in a subtree? Use Context.
- Is it consumed widely across the app? Use Zustand or Jotai.

Recommendation
Default to Tailwind CSS for new projects with a design system. Use vanilla-extract or CSS Modules when you need type safety on theme tokens. Avoid runtime CSS-in-JS for production applications — the runtime cost and bundle overhead are not justified.

Virtualization

Testing Accessibility
- Use
axe-corein CI (jest-axe or cypress-axe). - Test keyboard navigation manually for every interactive component.
- Test with a screen reader (VoiceOver, NVDA) before shipping.
- Enforce color contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text.

Build Configuration Rules
- Type-check in a separate process from bundling.
tsc --noEmitin CI, bundler handles transpilation. - Use environment variables at build time via
import.meta.envorprocess.env. Validate required vars at process start. - Enable source maps in development, disable or use hidden source maps in production.
- Use content hashing for long-term caching:

Principles
- Prefer integration tests over unit tests for UI components — test what the user sees and interacts with.
- Use MSW (Mock Service Worker) to intercept API calls at the network level. Never mock fetch or axios directly.
- Write E2E tests for the 3-5 most important flows. Do not convert all integration tests to E2E — they are slower and more brittle.
- Add a visual regression test when a component has complex CSS or responsive behavior.
