Core Decision Rules

  • Default to PostgreSQL for all primary data. Only add MongoDB, DynamoDB, or Cassandra when a specific access pattern demands it (high-volume time series, massive write throughput, unstructured blobs).
  • Default to a typed language (TypeScript, Go, Rust, Java, C#) for backend that outlives a prototype.
  • Default to server-rendered HTML with progressive enhancement for content-heavy sites. Reach for a SPA when the UI has complex client state or real-time updates.

GraphQL Guidelines

  • Expose a single endpoint (/api/graphql).
  • Use connection/pagination spec (Relay or simpler offset-based).
  • Implement DataLoader for N+1 prevention on every 1:many association.
  • Limit query depth (max 6 levels) and complexity scoring to prevent abuse.
  • Return null for individual field errors, never throw on partial failures.

Testing Principles

  • Write unit tests for business logic only. Avoid testing framework internals, library behavior, or trivial getters.
  • Write integration tests for every API endpoint. Use a real database (Testcontainers) in CI, not mocks. The database is the source of truth for data integrity.
  • Write E2E tests for the 3-5 most critical user journeys (signup, core workflow, payment). Everything else is covered by integration tests.
  • Do not test the same thing at multiple layers. The test pyramid exists to shift confidence left.
